  • In her role as Graduate Program Director, she gently yet persuasively led us toward much needed decisions and new processes. Dr. Hands is able to bring disparate views together in ways that are beneficial and productive…. The communication and collaboration that is exemplified in her faculty leadership and teaching extends to her community service and collaborations in schools, school boards, and advisory committees.

    Diane C., Associate Professor

  • Dr. Hands provided exceptional transparent and inclusive governance practices.…[She] facilitated the redesign of the Master of Education program inviting full participation of all Faculty of Education members, staff and graduate student representatives as selected by students, [and] provided collaborative leadership in the development of two dual-graduate degrees and the proposals for certificates and micro-certificates at the graduate level.

    Mary-Louise V., University Administrator

  • [During an innovative, two-year research project], I saw first-hand Dr. Hands’ continual resilience, adaptability, and courage as she took on a “learn-it-as-we-go” approach. I also witnessed how Catherine supported and taught those around her—through confident leadership, as well as on-going conversations and encouragement. I experienced how she puts people at ease in and outside of classroom settings, while at the same time creating teachable moments and equitable opportunities for all. Dr. Hands continues to hold a passion for …equitable leadership, which is … inspiring.

    Kari-Lynn W., Professor

  • Catherine genuinely cared about … the success of her students, and she was able to support students in a meaningful way and make important connections to areas of study that may have been a gap for the learner. Through all of this, she was also able to find time for fun and celebrate successes

Michelle B., Registered Nurse, former student

  • Whether we were examining the ethics of sensitive situations in schools or how stakeholders’ interests inform policy, Catherine guided us in learning how to think through difficult situations. The thought, time, and care in shaping each lecture was evident in the variety of learning strategies and tools she integrated into the course

Sandra M., sessional instructor and former school district consultant

  • As a university instructor, Dr. Hands holds an outstanding rapport with her students. This was evident to me through the praise of her teaching amongst my classmates, as well as practically through the level of student engagement in each class session she instructed. The interactive nature of her classes was refreshing and allowed us, as students, to engage in the material at hand through a combination of lectures, discussion, and activities.

Katlyn G., university learning strategist and former student

  • Her visionary outlook impacted me positively and helped me carry a sense of purpose into my workplace. She helped me grow with humanity, to think globally, to challenge existing schools of thought and to critically think and reflect on those aspects within society that continue to oppress those marginalized within society.

Suzanne R-C, sustainability expert and former student
